We need a competent coach with no interference for the Black Stars- Dan Quaye

Former Black Stars defender, Dan Quaye has advocated for a competent coach with no interference for the Balck Stars.

The Black Stars are currently without a coach following their abysmal performance in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) where they exited the group stages.

The entire technical team of head coach Chris Hughton and his two assistants, George Boateng and Didi Dramani have been relieved of their duties by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) days after arriving in Ghana.

However, the GFA has set up a 5-member committe to hire a new coach for the team ahead of the 2025 AFCON and World Cup in 2026.

According to Dan Quaye, in order for the Black Stars to excel, the team needs a competent manager who will no pay attention to any interference with regards to his job.

Speaking to LinusNartey TV on YouTube, Quaye said “Our problem is short. The Black Stars needs a competent coach with no interference so that he can recruit his backroom staff (scouts and assistants) to work with. Because when the coach gets free hands to work and he fails, he takes the blame but when there is interference and he fails, it’s different”, he said.

He argued that, Ghana paraded a bad team with most not deserving a spot in the team during the AFCON.

“You were in Ivory Coast, can you tell me we went with the right players? We have alot of players, but we have to pay attention to our call-ups. National Team (African football) is different from the European game. Because in Europe, you have enough gap but there is no gap in Africa which makes the African game difficult than the European football”, he added.

He made Ghana’s final squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany as one of the local based players.

Dan Quaye started his career with Great Olympics before moving to Hearts of Oak.

The versatile defender also had spells in China after which he returned to Ghana to play for Eleven Wise and a second stint with Hearts of Oak.
