Tom & Birmingham wield the axe last night sacking the Manchester united legend Wayne Rooney as Birmingham City Football Club boss for failing to leave up up expectation after just 15 games in the championship.
Wayne Rooney took over as manager at the ST Andrews in October ,11 2023 on a three and half year deal but had to pay the price for the poor run with nine defeats, made collection of just 10 points from a possible 45 points. Short before the Rooney’s appointment, the Blues did occupied the play-off position but Birmingham now sit 20th in the championship table with only six-points gap separating them from the relegation zone.
Birmingham’s defeat by Leeds United in a 0-3 which turns to be the ninth defeat for the Blues instigated the decisive decision for Rooney exit. Rooney will not be given the chance to turn things around by the board confirmed by the chief executive officer of Birmingham City on the clubs’s website, it reads: “We are committed to doing what is necessary to bring success to St. Andrew’s. “Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned and we have decided to move in a different direction. The search for a successor begins with immediate effect and we will update supporters when we have further news.”
Birmingham have also confirmed that Steve Spooner, the club’s professional development coach, will take charge of the first-team on an interim basis.
Rooney released a statement in the wake of his sacking, which read: “I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City Football Club and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club. Football is a results business and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be.
However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed. Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager. Finally, I wish Birmingham City FC and its owners my best wishes in the pursuit of their ambitions.”
