SAFA President Danny Jordaan reaffirms trust in Hugo Broos as Bafana Bafana Manager

President of the South African Football Association Danny Jordaan has revealed that his outfit has no plans to fire Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos after their performance at the AFCON 2023.

At the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations, the Bafana Bafana accomplished the unthinkable by taking home the bronze medal and the prized Fair Play trophy from the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Before the competition, the Bafana Bafana failed to win their friendlies, and SAFA was charged with not providing the team with enough resources.

But in order to create a final 23-man Afcon roster, Broos selected 20 players from the SA Premiership. This strategy proved to be effective as Bafana eliminated teams like Morocco.

And thanks to Broos’ methods, the Bafana Bafana received a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday.

However, with Algeria and Tunisia all keen on getting Broos to handle the sides, fears are that the Belgian will be leaving South Africa.

Following lacklustre performances in the Afcon, Djamel Belmadi and Mondher Kebaier, respectively, resigned and were fired, leaving the two teams without a coach.

However, Jordaan believes that they have more ground to go, including earning spots in the 2026 World Cup and the Afcon next year, so they do not intend to part with Broos anytime soon.

“So, coach, thank you very much for all your efforts. But our journey is going to continue. There’s still another mission ahead of us. We must complete the task,” Jordaan said.

The Bafana Bafana will return to action on March 21 in a friendly match against Andorra in Algeria, before coming up against Nigeria away and Zimbabwe at home in June in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
