Nigeria: Jose Peseiro quits Super Eagles coaching job

After guiding Nigeria to the final of the just-ended African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro has left his role as head coach for the Super Eagles.

In a statement posted on social media, Peseiro expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with Nigeria.

He said, “It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment.”

He also thanked the team and its officials, adding, “Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you.”

In May 2022, Peseiro was named Nigeria’s coach in spite of reservations regarding his prior performance.
But last month, in Ivory Coast, he led the squad to a successful qualification for the postponed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the team’s 2-1 defeat against the host country in the championship game, Peseiro’s efforts were highly valued.

Peseiro was criticised for his defensive strategies despite his success, but he never wavered in his devotion to the group and its objectives.

His exit would probably lead to a hunt for a new coach, with some urging the Nigeria Football Federation to look into appointing a less expensive local coach.
