Nigeria: Austin Eguavoen returns as Nigeria manager after Peseiro exit

Following Jose Peseiro’s departure, Augustine Owen Eguavoen, the technical director of the Super Eagles, has assumed the coaching position for the Nigerian football team, according to Soccernet.ng.

After Nigeria’s elimination from the AFCON 2021 competition in Cameroon, Peseiro, 63, was named the Super Eagles’ new coach. He assumed his position in May 2022.

The Portuguese guided Nigeria to the Ivory Coast for the AFCON 2023 competition, but Sebastien Haller put the final nail in the coffin of the worn-out Super Eagles.

The former Porto manager left the squad in February, even though he had taken a pay reduction, and he no longer served as the Super Eagles’ bench boss.

As far as Soccernet.ng is aware, Augustine Eguavoen, the team’s technical director, will lead the three-time AFCON winners in the interim while a long-term solution is worked out.

After former coach Gernot Rohr resigned, the former right wing-back for the Super Eagles led the Nigerian team in the AFCON 2021 competition in Cameroon.

After Nigeria was eliminated by Tunisia in the round of sixteen of the AFCON competition in Cameroon, the 58-year-old continued to lead the team.

When the team competed in the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast and won a silver medal, Eguavoen was serving as their technical director.
