My defense did not let me down – Richard Ofori

Black Stars goalie, Richard Ofori has backed his backline despite Ghana’s disappointing 2-2 stalemate with Egypt in their second Group B game of the 2023 AFCON at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Thursday.

The four-time winners of the prestigious AFCON scored twice through posterboy Kudus Mohammed after a brilliant start.

However, the defense of Ghana gave out two cheap goals as the Egyptians capitalised on the defensive errors to draw level through Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohammed.

Speaking to the media after the game, the Orlando Pirates man rallied behind his back four, adding that they did not let him down, hence they move together as a team.

“No, we move as a team and mistakes do happen in a game and we don’t have control over those things. Sometimes in a game, we have control over our performance but what will happen in a game, we don’t have control. I won’t say my defense let me down, they fought very hard, but unfortunately we conceded”, he said.

“But we fight as a team and we loose as a team. So we need to go back to the board because now we need everyone to support the team ahead of our last game against Mozambique”, he further stated.

The Black Stars of Ghana were given a shock of their life when they lost 1-2 to Cape Verde in their opening game last Sunday.

The Cape Verdians grabbed two goals before defender Alexander Djiku pulled one back for Coach Chris Hughton’s side.

As it stands now, Cape Verde have booked a place in the next round after seeing off Mozambique 3-0 today with 6 points.

They face seven-time winners Egypt in their last Group B game as a win for the Egyptians would see them join Cape Verde to the next stage with 5 points, with the latter picking two draws against Mozambique and Ghana.

On the side of Ghana, having picked just a point after two games, the Stars must win at all cost against the Mozambicans to secure a place as one of the best third nations with 4 points.
