Former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has likened African giants Al Ahly to European giants Real Madrid, while also revealing his admiration for former player Mohamed Aboutrika.
As part of the Riyadh Season, Mourinho received an invitation to Saudi Arabia to present the Egypt Cup during the final between Al Ahly and Zamalek on Friday night in 2022–2023.
Al Ahly emerged victorious in a nail-biting Cairo derby, winning 2-0 with goals from Mohamed Magdy Afsha and Emam Ashour in the closing minutes.
Speaking on the game, Mourinho said: “Al Ahly are maybe the Real Madrid of Africa. The amount of titles they won is incredible.
“Even the amount of times they participated in the Club World Cup and competed with international teams.
“If I am not wrong, a player that I was always in love with was playing for Al Ahly was [Mohamed] Aboutrika. I loved him.”
Al Ahly are the all-time CAF Champions League record winners with 11 titles.
