Former Dreams FC goalie, Lord Bawa Martey has disclosed that, he was not disappointed to have been dropped from the final 22-man squad for an AFCON qualifier in 2021.
Bawa Martey was named among the provisional 32-man squad by former coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor during a qualifier game for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
After days of training with the team, Bawa Martey who was then with Elmina Sharks did not make the final cut for the double against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.
According to him, his exploits led to his debut call-up, though he was least expectant but was not disappointed to have been dropped, adding that, he hopes to become Black Stars number 1 goalie soon.
Speaking to LinusNartey TV on YouTube, he said “Yes I knew I was doing well but had no idea I will receive a call-up and even if I should, it wouldn’t have been the Black Stars. So when the news came, I was very excited. It was my teammate who knocked on my door and called me National, National. It was a great feeling, but I wasn’t disappointed I was not named in the final squad because the fact that a national team coach has seen your games and included you in his 32-man squad, you should know you are already a National Asset. You have to work hard to mount the post as Ghana’s number 1 and I always say that soon I will be in post for the Black Stars”.
Bawa Martey started his career with Division One side Proud United and crossed paths to Dreams FC after a season and half.
He joined Dreams FC in 2022 on a year deal and left at the end of the 2022/23 season.
Following his exit from Dreams, the 26-year-old shot stopper is currently unattached despite attracting interest from clubs both in Ghana and abroad.
