Guinea Bissau Pesident honours coach Baciro Cande with the highest honour ahead of AFCON

Guinea Bissau President H.E Umaro Sissoco Embaló bestowed upon national team coach Baciro Candé, the Colinas de Boé medal of honour, acknowledging his extraordinary achievement in the country’s football.

The Colinas de Boe medal, which is the highest honour granted by the West African country, was presented by the president to show appreciation for coach Candé’s outstanding performances and to bid the team farewell at a ceremony on Wednesday, January 3.

Since assuming the role as the head coach in 2016, Guinea Bissau has not missed a single African Cup of Nations competition, with the 56-year old guiding the Djurtus to its fourth consecutive qualification in the prestigious tournament.

In 2017, Guinea-Bissau qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in history under the guidance of coach Baciro Candé.

Baciro Cande has his name written in gold in the history of Bissau-Guinean football. He would, however, be looking to make a difference this time round after failing to make it past the group stages in the precious three editions of the tournament.

The Djurtus will face Mali in a friendly in Bamako on Saturday, January 6, 2024, before heading across the border to Ivory Coast.

Guinea Bissau will begin their campaign against host country Ivory Coast in the opening game of the AFCON on Saturday, January 13, at the Stade Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan, before facing Equatorial Guinea five days later. Their final group A game is against Nigeria on January 22.
