Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has, on Friday, officially commissioned the University of Ghana Stadium (Legon Stadium) in Accra, which has been renovated to host some of the events of the 13th African Games, Accra 2023.
Before the Games’ official opening on March 8, preparations for the stadium, which can hold 11,000 spectators, were presented in a vibrant ceremony.
The African Games are important because they represent African unity, independence, political and economic collaboration, and historical and cultural awareness, Dr. Bawumia said during the event.
He added that the Games are in line with the UN’s view that sports can be used to achieve long-term socioeconomic development.
The difficulties faced in building the University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Rugby Field as well as the Borteyman Sports Complex were recognised by Dr Bawumia.
However, he cites Ghana’s quick and significant financial gains as evidence that the advantages of hosting the African Games greatly exceed the disadvantages.
Over 13,000 top athletes, sports administrators, technical specialists, officials, journalists and volunteers will compete in a variety of sports at the African Games.
The occasion honours African sporting brilliance and encourages participant camaraderie, togetherness, and cross-cultural interchange.
Ghana’s successful hosting of the African Games highlights the nation’s resolve to advance socioeconomic development, peace, and unity while showcasing its rich cultural legacy to the outside world.
