The Algerian head coach Djamel Belmadi has recalled Mustapha Zeghba, initially dropped from the final squared to climax the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast slated to kickstart on January 13, 2023.
The call up was due to Rais M’Bolhi’s injury, the veteran goalkeeper picked up an injury during the teams Tuesday’s training session in Lome, much concern has been raised about the severity of the injury.
While the team awaits further updates to the extent of the injury on Rais, head coach Djamel Belmadi and his technical handlers deemed it fit considering the situational analysis to recall the 33 year FC Damac’s goalkeeper Mustapha Zeghba with 7 appearance at the national.
Although the experience shot stopper has not been totally ruled out, Zeghba’s recall is just a preventative measure.
The veteran shot stopper M’Bolhi Rais at age 37, has been an integral part of the Algerian senior national team at various competitions, making 96 appearance for the fennecs.
He played a pivot role at the 2019 African Championship and at the 2014 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal. Bringa a wealth of experience. His absence will be a complete set back to the fennecs of Algeria.
Anthony Mendrea is expected to assume the role of the primary goalkeeper for the fennecs.
The fennecs of Algeria in group D, will come against the likes of Mauritania, Angola and Burkina Faso.
