AFCON 2023: Oduro Sarfo fires Chris Hughton for Ghana’s elimination

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association, Nana Sarfo Oduro has blasted former Ghana manager Chris Hughton, calling him a ‘bad coach’ following the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The Black Stars were eliminated from the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament after failing to win a game in all their 3 games at the group stage of the tournament.

The elimination of the Black Stars has invited varied criticism for the Ghana FA but the ExCo member believes Hughton deserves a chunk of the blame.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Sarfo criticised Hughton’s tactics, stating that they were not good enough for the Black Stars.

“I don’t want to describe Chris Hughton as a bad coach, but he was not good enough to coach the Black Stars,” Sarfo said. ‘His tactics were not good enough. He is a bad coach.”

Since then, the GFA has established a five-person committee to advise the Executive Council on a new coach. The committee’s job is to find a worthy successor for Hughton, who was fired due to the team’s dismal AFCON results.

The GFA is eager to select a coach who can guide the Black Stars to victory in upcoming competitions, hence a comprehensive search for a new coach is anticipated.

Hughton’s departure has caused controversy among Ghanaian football supporters, as many have expressed differing views regarding his time as coach.

Sarfo’s remarks have caused considerable debate, nevertheless, as some contend that he was overly critical of Hughton’s ability.

The GFA is still dedicated to finding Hughton a worthy successor in order to reinvigorate the Black Stars and reestablish them as one of Africa’s best football teams, in spite of the criticism.
