AFCON 2023: Nigeria keeper Stanley Nwabali equals 44-year old record

Nigeria goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has equalled the record of Best Ogedegbe after keeping another clean sheets in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast 2023.

The Super Eagles defeated the Palanca Negras of Angola courtesy a lone goal from Ademola Lookman’s to qualify to the semi final of the competition.

This makes Nigeria return into the semi-final since 2019 after missing out on the podium in the last AFCON.

It was the fourth consecutive clean sheet for Nigeria after conceding in their tournament opener against Equatorial Guinea.

Stanley Nwabali was entrusted with the confidence as he takes over the spot from Francis Uzoho.

After conceding in the first game against Equatorial Guinea, the 27 year old Chippa United goalie has now gone four games without conceding a goal.

That is against Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau, Cameroon and Angola.

This makes Nwabali to equal the record of Best Ogedegbe in 1980 when Nigeria hosted and won the AFCON title on home soil.

Already Stanley Nwabali equalled the record of Alloy Agu in 1990 after the 2:0 win over Cameroon and the win against Angola has made him match Best Ogedegbe’s 44 year old record.

The Super Eagles will now continue their quest to land a 4th continental glory as they now set their sight on the title.

Stanley Nwabali will hope to continue his impressive performance in the tournament as the three time Champions await a semi-final opponent of either South Africa or Cape Verde at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
