Hosts Ivory Coast overcame defending champions Senegal in a penalty shootout to secure a quarterfinal berth in a keenly contested clash in Yamoussoukro on Monday.

Senegal took the lead early in the game when Habib Diallo scored off a cross from Sadio Mane in the fourth minute.
But Ivory Coast rallied, and Franck Kessie’s penalty four minutes left in normal time allowed them to tie the score.
A penalty shootout was utilised to determine who advances to the next round after extra time was completed and neither team was able to win.
Ivory Coast secured a thrilling victory thanks to a penalty kick converted by Kessie, who had already scored earlier in the game.
Ivory Coast won the penalty shootout 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, with the final score after extra time being 1-1.
In the quarterfinals, Ivory Coast will now play either Burkina Faso or Mali on Saturday at 17:00 GMT.
In what should be an intriguing contest, the victor of Tuesday’s match between Mali and Burkina Faso—who play their last-16 tie in Korhogo—will take on Ivory Coast.
