AFCON 2023: Ghana manager Chris Hughton left disappointed over 2-2 draw with Egypt

Ghana manager, Chris Hughton has expressed his disappointment following his side’s 2-2 draw with Egypt in the second Group B game of the African Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars led twice against the Pharaohs courtesy goals from Mohammed Kudus.

However, they conceded twice through individual errors to draw 2-2, leaving the team with a point after two group games.

Addressing the media after the game, the former Tottenham Hotspurs manager could not hide disappointment, but insisted his side will be ready for the final group game.

“It is disappointing. For me when you put in a performance like this it is a winning performance but unfortunately this is football and there are some things you have to accept.”

Hughton lauded his team for their display and believes similar performance against Mozambique in the final group game will be enough to earn the team a place in the knockout rounds.

“We made mistakes but the level of performance was good and we will need this going into the next game and if we do put up this sort of performance, we have every chance of going through

When quizzed if the performance against Egypt was the best under his tutelage, he said: “Yes,” he responded. I think because of the opposition (Egypt), being one of the favourites to win the competition. So, I think probably, in my time here, this is our best performance.”

Ghana will face Mozambique in the final group B game on Monday at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.

Following Cape Verde’s qualification on Friday, the Black Stars need a win to advance to the knockout round as the second placed team in the group or one of the best four third placed teams.
