AFCON 2023: Cameroon manager Rigobert Song ready for Super Eagles clash

Head coach of the Indomitable Lions, Rigobert Song has revealed he’s unafraid of the threats posed by the West African rivals Nigeria ahead of Saturday’s pivotal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Round of 16 match between Cameroon and Nigeria.

Felix Houphouet Boigny, the same stadium where the Central African team won their first-ever AFCON championship in 1984, will host the match between the two teams.

They had to weather a late scare against the Gambia to achieve a 3-2 victory, which was sufficient to guarantee a spot in the knockout stage and a matchup with the Super Eagles, following a disorganised start to their 2023 AFCON campaign with a point after two games.

In his opening remark during the pre-match press conference, the former Cameroon international, Song opined that his team is not in danger of an early exit.

“We you know you are in danger you are no longer in danger. Today, we are in a period we know what we want to do. We have prepared vevry well,” Song told journalists in Abidjan on Friday.

“There is nothing to look for in sport. We look for the positives and correct the negatives. We will correct and address what was wrong to get the necessary result.

Acknowledging the quality in Nigerian side, Song reiterated the importance of winning the match.

“I know that Nigeria is a very good team. We have met several times. It is a team we need to take very seriously. I know that my players are ready. For us to remain in the competition, we need to win the game.”

Super Eagles recorded a 3-2 win over the Indomitable Lions in both side’s last AFCON meeting in 2019 with Nigeria having good head-to-head record over the Central African side in recent times.
