Nigeria’s female senior national team – The Super Falcons – on Monday pipped their Cameroonian counterparts to secure qualification to the final phase of the 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers.
A 14th minute strike from esther Okoronkwo was all that the Super Falcons needed to secure their place in the next round.
Following a goalless draw in the first leg held in Cameroon, the lone goal has proved the most important element for the Nigerians who had to hand on for more than 70 minutes to qualify.
Both Nigeria and Cameroon are two of the biggest teams in African women’s football and were expected to play fiercely.
The Super Falcons showed tenacity throughout the game, motivated by a desire to end a 16-year hiatus from the Olympic Games.
Fans and players alike celebrated Okoronkwo’s accurate strike, which was a major turning point in Nigeria’s Olympic qualifying campaign.
Nigeria is anticipating the result of the match between Tanzania and South Africa.
With a dominant performance against Tanzania, South Africa now leads 3-0 from the first leg.
Nigeria are likely to square-off with South Africa in the final qualifier to know who will qualify between the two for the Olympic games to be hosted in France later this year.
